Water Margin, (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh) is well-known as one of the four greatest Chinese novels in history. It tells stories of a group of outlaws who become heroes. They stand for different classes of people who are daring to struggle against evil.

There are 105 men and 3 women in all who are oppressed by the corruption, decadence and unjust authority, and then rise up! These stories take place at the end of the North Song period, describing various vivid pictures of love, hate and friendship. The heroes do many good deeds to help the poor by stopping evil. They are referred to as 36 Heavenly Spirits and 72 Earthly Friends.

Later, they surrender themselves to the officials, obeying to fight with other kingdoms. Tragically, most of the heroes die in the end.
